Ferro-vanadium prices dropped in Europe on Wednesday October 23, as market participants reported considerably weaker sentiment.
Metal Bulletin’s quotation fell to $24.40-25.35 per kg on Wednesday, from $24.50-25.50 per kg previously.
Suggestions have also emerged that prices could drop below $24 per kg imminently, as demand remains relatively thin and buyers look to destock into the end of the year.
“I would consider buying, but I don’t really see the point now. It’s healthier for us not to have stocks right now,” a trader said.
Prices have been weakening steadily in recent weeks, after breaking through $33 per kg earlier in the year, and some market participants have suggested prices could even slip below $23 per kg.
“I don’t know where it’s going to go. It struggles below $22 because $21 is the cost of production but [the Chinese] are anticipating prices below $23,” a second trader said.
“[There have been suggestions] of $24, but I was put off. It becomes a Dutch auction because buyers sense weakness.”
Meanwhile, others have said it is not possible to achieve such low prices, and have suggested levels are still comfortably above $25 per kg.
“I’ve heard offers at $25.35 – no one is selling at $24. We haven’t sold below $25,” another market participant said.
“I’ve heard some in-warehouse deals and they were still above $25,” he added.
A producer added that he believes most offers are closer to $25 per kg, and that to go as low as $24 per kg would be “ridiculous”.
“To me, it doesn’t make any sense. If you want to buy material in China, which is cheaper at the moment, you still have to pay $24.50,” he said.
